Brighton 5–0 Crystal Palace: Gomez Scores Stunner

Brighton Thrash Crystal Palace 5–0 as Diego Gomez Scores Stunning Halfway-Line Goal

Brighton & Hove Albion delivered a sensational performance to beat Crystal Palace 5–0 at the American Express Stadium on 18 October, scoring three goals inside the opening 10 minutes and producing one of the most memorable moments of the Premier League season.

The emphatic victory was sealed by goals from Jaydee Canvot, whose own goal opened the scoring, Diego Gomez, Yasin Ayari, Charalampos Kostoulas and Jack Hinshelwood. Gomez stole the headlines with an extraordinary strike from inside his own half, while Brighton’s relentless attacking display left Palace with little chance of recovering.

Brighton 5–0 Crystal Palace: Match Report

Brighton wasted little time taking control of the derby. Palace defender Jaydee Canvot put the ball into his own net in the fourth minute, giving the home side an early advantage.

Just three minutes later, Gomez doubled Brighton’s lead with a spectacular long-range effort. Spotting goalkeeper Walter Benitez away from his goal, the Paraguayan midfielder struck from just inside Palace’s half and sent the ball over the stranded goalkeeper.

The home side continued to attack, and Ayari made it 3–0 in the 10th minute after a move involving Kostoulas. Brighton had scored three times before Palace could establish any meaningful control of the match.

The early blitz effectively decided the contest, but Fabian Hürzeler’s side showed no intention of easing off after the break.

Kostoulas scored Brighton’s fourth goal in the 49th minute, extending the hosts’ advantage shortly after half-time. Substitute Jack Hinshelwood then completed the rout in the 84th minute, capping a dominant afternoon for the Seagulls.

Diego Gomez’s halfway-line goal steals the show

Although Brighton’s five goals reflected a collective effort, Gomez’s strike was the defining moment of the match.

The midfielder scored from approximately 51.3 yards, according to Brighton’s official report. The distance made it the longest-range Premier League goal since Wayne Rooney’s effort in 2017, while only seven players in the competition’s history had scored from farther away.

Gomez’s awareness was just as impressive as his execution. Recognising that Benitez had moved away from his goal, he reacted immediately and produced a finish that left the goalkeeper unable to recover.

The goal also highlighted the confidence and quick decision-making that characterised Brighton’s performance. Rather than settling for a comfortable lead, the Seagulls continued to exploit the space available to them.

The statistics behind Brighton’s dominant win

The final score was supported by Brighton’s superiority in the attacking numbers. The official match-centre statistics show a clear difference in the teams’ ability to create and convert opportunities.

Brighton registered nine shots on target compared with Palace’s one. That difference illustrates how effectively the hosts turned their attacking pressure into genuine scoring opportunities.

The possession figures also show that Brighton did not need to dominate the ball overwhelmingly to control the contest. Their pressing, movement and efficiency in the final third were decisive.

Palace’s five shots and limited accuracy, meanwhile, underline the difficulty they experienced in building a response after conceding three times in the opening 10 minutes.

What the result means for Brighton and Crystal Palace

The victory extended Brighton’s winning run to six consecutive matches in all competitions, according to the club’s official report.

It also strengthened the Seagulls’ position among the Premier League’s leading sides. Reuters reported that Brighton moved into third place following the victory, with 23 goals scored and five clean sheets after seven league matches. The team had also recorded a goal difference of +18.

These figures suggest that Brighton’s strong start has been built on more than individual moments of brilliance. Their ability to score through different players and maintain defensive solidity has given them a balanced foundation.

For Crystal Palace, the defeat was a significant setback. Conceding three goals so early left the visitors facing an uphill battle, and the subsequent goals demonstrated how difficult it was to contain Brighton throughout the afternoon.

The result also carried added significance because Palace had beaten Brighton 1–0 in their previous league meeting in February. Sunday’s emphatic response therefore provided Brighton with a measure of revenge in the rivalry.

Our analysis: Brighton turn promise into a statement

Brighton’s 5–0 victory was impressive not simply because of the scoreline, but because of the speed and conviction with which the team took control.

Scoring three times inside 10 minutes effectively removed the uncertainty from the contest. The early goals rewarded Brighton’s aggressive approach, while the fourth and fifth demonstrated that the team maintained its focus after establishing a substantial advantage.

Gomez’s spectacular finish will attract the greatest attention, but the broader performance deserves equal recognition. Ayari and Kostoulas contributed important goals, Hinshelwood added a late finish, and Pascal Gross played a key creative role, registering two assists according to the club’s report.

From our perspective, Brighton’s greatest achievement was combining individual quality with collective effectiveness. Their early attacking intensity, ability to exploit defensive space and continued threat after half-time made this a convincing derby performance.

However, a single emphatic result does not establish that a team is ready to challenge for the Premier League title. Maintaining this level across a full season will require consistency, squad depth and the ability to handle more difficult matches.

For now, Brighton have delivered a powerful statement to their rivals. Crystal Palace, meanwhile, will need to respond by addressing the defensive problems exposed during a devastating opening 10 minutes.
