Harry Kane is on the verge of another piece of England history. The Bayern Munich striker is set to win his 125th senior cap if he plays against Czechia at Wembley, which would take him level with Peter Shilton as England’s most-capped men’s player.
The milestone would add another landmark to an international career in which Kane has already become England’s all-time leading scorer. After scoring twice in the 7-0 Nations League win over Croatia, he has 89 goals in 124 appearances and needs only one more cap to draw level with Shilton’s long-standing record.
| Record | Harry Kane |
|---|---|
| England senior caps | 124 |
| England goals | 89 |
| Caps needed to equal Peter Shilton | 1 |
| England’s all-time goalscorer ranking | 1st |
| England debut | 27 March 2015 |
| Current club | Bayern Munich |
England’s official records confirm that Kane currently sits second on the men’s all-time appearance list, behind Shilton’s 125 caps. Wayne Rooney is third with 120, followed by David Beckham on 115.
Kane made his senior England debut against Lithuania on 27 March 2015. He scored just 79 seconds after coming on as a substitute, immediately providing an indication of the goalscoring impact he would have for the national team.
He has since developed from an emerging striker into England captain and the country’s record goalscorer. The England Football profile records his 100th appearance as coming against Finland in September 2024, when he scored twice in a 2-0 victory at Wembley.
That journey from debutant to record-chasing captain has taken just over a decade.
The appearance record is the latest major England landmark in Kane’s career, but it is not his first.
Kane surpassed Wayne Rooney’s previous England scoring record of 53 goals in March 2023. His two goals against Croatia took his international total to 89, giving him a substantial lead over Rooney, who finished his England career with 53 goals in 120 appearances.
His scoring record also extends to major tournaments. During the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Kane moved beyond Gary Lineker’s previous England record for World Cup goals and finished the tournament with 14. FIFA also records Kane’s remarkable World Cup scoring career across three tournaments.
That combination of longevity and productivity makes his caps record particularly significant. Kane is not simply accumulating appearances; he has remained one of England’s most influential players throughout them.
Peter Shilton’s 125 England appearances have stood as the men’s national-team record since his international career ended after the 1990 World Cup.
England Football’s official record list places Shilton first with 125 caps, Kane second with 124 and Rooney third with 120.
If Kane is selected against Czechia, he will therefore become a joint record holder on 125 caps rather than immediately taking the record outright.
That distinction matters. Kane would need to play again after reaching 125 to move beyond Shilton and become England’s outright most-capped men’s player.
Kane’s numbers illustrate why the caps milestone carries greater weight than a simple appearance count.
He has been a regular starter for England for most of his international career, became captain and has repeatedly delivered goals in major competitions. Before the Czechia fixture, UEFA noted that Kane had scored in all three of England’s Nations League matches in the current campaign, with four goals in those games.
His role has also changed over time. Kane began his England career primarily as a penalty-box striker but has increasingly contributed as a creator and focal point for England’s attack. That evolution has helped him remain central to successive England teams and managers.
The longevity is equally notable. His first senior appearance came in 2015; by the time he reaches 125, he will have accumulated those appearances across multiple major tournaments and managerial eras.
The immediate milestone is a joint record. The next step would be even more historic.
England’s schedule includes Nations League matches against Croatia and Spain in November. England Football’s official record preview states that Kane would be able to establish a new outright men’s appearance record if he plays after equalling Shilton’s total.
That means the record chase is likely to have two stages:
The first milestone could arrive at Wembley against Czechia. The second would require another appearance in a subsequent England fixture.
Whether viewed through goals, appearances, tournament performances or captaincy, Kane has already established himself among England’s most significant modern internationals.
His 89 goals put him comfortably at the top of the country’s men’s scoring list, while 124 caps place him immediately behind Shilton for appearances. He has also surpassed Beckham, Bobby Moore, Steven Gerrard and other celebrated names on the caps list.
The remaining question is not whether Kane belongs among England’s statistical greats. The numbers have already answered that.
The question is how far beyond the existing records he can go.
From Sport 4 ever’s perspective, Kane’s pursuit of the England caps record is significant because it combines two qualities that rarely coexist at this level: exceptional scoring output and extraordinary durability.
Shilton’s record survived more than three decades, so matching it is an achievement in its own right. But Kane’s position is even more remarkable because he is approaching the mark while already owning England’s goalscoring record.
If he reaches 126 caps, Kane will hold both of England’s most prominent individual senior records — appearances and goals. That would provide a statistical summary of a career that has already placed him firmly in the upper tier of English football history.
Harry Kane has 124 England senior caps before England’s Nations League match against Czechia on 6 October. One further appearance would take him to 125.
Peter Shilton currently holds the England men’s senior appearance record with 125 caps. Kane is one appearance behind him.
Kane has scored 89 goals for England, making him the country’s all-time leading men’s goalscorer.
Kane made his England debut against Lithuania on 27 March 2015 and scored shortly after coming on as a substitute.
Yes. If he equals Shilton’s 125 caps, Kane would need one additional appearance to move to 126 and become England’s outright most-capped men’s player. England Football has identified the November fixtures as an opportunity for him to set the new record if he reaches 125 against Czechia.
